I Believe In Education

Above a really young girl holds back her skirt while holding up a condom. Is the guy in the thought bubble a happy pedophile or is he congratulating a gesture of safe-sex? Is this image an example of the immoral sexualization of children or a triumphant depiction of the hopes of sex education?

CNN: “A district attorney in Juneau County, Wisconsin, warned teachers in a memo sent to schools that if they teach the new sexual education curriculum mandated under state law, they could be arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a child.”

Dammit. What to do? Following one law violates another. Of course the conservative DA thinks morality is above education. I’m going to try to ignore reality for a minute. Let’s think of all non-adults as the essence of purity. Yes. I see it now. Wow. I’ve forgotten that minors live in a magical candy land. They ride unicorns to school and are completely submissive to authority. That’s right. At midnight on their eighteenth birthday their genitals pop into existence. At that very moment they’re pushed into the adult world and only then can they be educated.

This sentence includes links to research dismissing abstinence-only education. It’s troubling that the recent health care reform includes funding for abstinence ed, in contradiction of Obama’s 2010 budget, which was supposed to cut funding for such programs.

In uplifting news, Switzerland is selling condoms that fit 12-year-olds. That’s how you protect the children.
