You probably noticed my rather opinionated temper this week. How are you liking that? Good. Well, there’s more expressing to be done.

Today’s topic:
Teens Charged with Child Porn for Taking Photos of Themselves

Child porn laws were made to protect the abused. Recent cases show the law is being applied to protect teens from… themselves. You know, because images of their own anatomy and of others they’re already fucking are harmful to their adolescent brains. Labeling a 16-year-old a sex offender for photographing their body is as ridiculous as ridiculous gets… or maybe not. Soon mirrors will be confiscated from their bathrooms, and they’ll be required to bathe blindfolded. Also, nudity isn’t pornography.

Then there’s the case of teens actually videoing themselves in the midst of sex. That’s trickier to defend. But ordering high schoolers to not record their actions doesn’t erase their doings or desires from existence. Like or dislike it, minors are having sex. The same principles (above paragraph) used for nude pics, should still apply. Coercion and abuse are not involved; it’s their decision and the product is their own creation. How can you tell someone they can’t capture a moment in their lives just because it’s taboo?
OK, so what if their pics and videos leak out to where an 18+ audience can see them? That’s pretty much inevitable and the main problem here. The easiest solution is to make it a crime for teens to photograph or record themselves in the nude or in sexual poses and acts. Obviously, this is what’s currently happening, but as argued above it’s not completely just. It’s not clear what can be done to protect the rights of adolescents, while at the same time keep their stuff away from the ‘adults’. Or is that last part necessary?
