the bane of my existence

The Streets Aren’t Safe

It’s super hard to avoid human sexuality today. Billboards, HBO, the Internet: they all glisten with smutty smut. As you’re well aware, with today’s accessible technology, it doesn’t take much effort for anyone to indulge in sexually explicit entertainment. Preventative measures such as pixelation, NSFW tags/warning messages, rating systems, and filtering software have helped to curb the excitement. But even with all the censoring society imposes, this ‘sex’ thing isn’t losing strength. Soon enough hard cocks will be part of the backdrop as you walk down the street. Actually, it’s already happening. This I learned on the corner of Hollywood and Las Palmas:

explicit uncensored porn on newsstand

That magazine cover featuring the preceding moment to fellatio was on display on a sidewalk-newsstand in full daylight. Following a screening of Barry Lyndon (a three-hour movie) at the Egyptian, it remained untouched. No one cared or noticed, and this made me happy. The newsstand’s bold display was most likely not intended by the vendor. The pornography’s placement was probably left by a mischievous passerby. Wouldn’t it be nice, though, if the vendor was indifferent, and the only people who noticed it were the ones who were looking, and as they saw it they thought nothing of it, expressing the same non-reaction they had to every other magazine on sale.

It reminds me of the pirated DVD stores I visited in South America, some of which had their uncovered porn section a few feet away from Spongebob.

I’ve been ready to call it quits on concealment. If a kid can catch a glimpse of a blowjob on Hollywood Blvd and more on a computer screen, what’s the point of hiding our collective stash? Sex and porn are out of the bag. It makes sense to be frank at this point.

I had a very tame and mild love scene with Jon Hamm. It was like heavy breathing and making out. It was hardly a sex scene… I think that it’s great for this young girl to actually take control of her own sexuality. Well, the MPAA doesn’t like that. They don’t think a girl should ever be in control of her own sexuality because they’re from the Stone Age. I don’t know what the fuck is going on and I will openly criticize it, happily. So essentially, they got Zack to edit the scene and make it look less like she’s into it. And Zack said he edited it down to the point where it looked like he was taking advantage of her. That’s the only way he could get a PG-13 (rating) and he said, ‘I don’t want to send that message.’ So they cut the scene!

Dot XXX approved

The .xxx top-level domain was approved by ICANN on Friday following years of failed attempts by the domain’s sponsor ICM Registry. .xxx is restricted to “adult sites” but is not mandatory.

The porn industry may be protesting about their financial losses (purchasing of domains to protect brands), but they’re correct on the free speech implications of a .xxx world.

Paul Cambria, industry attorney (via Xbiz):

“.XXX would afford a step toward content-based categorization of otherwise lawful speech. It would also provide a very convenient tool for those who have the power to either censor or prevent lawful speech to be disseminated.”

Like warning interstitials .xxx is a pointless move in an effort to give the prim false security. It’s misdirection: “Hey look. All the porn is over here at .XXX, easy to find but conveniently out of the way! ; )” Except it’s voluntary, so .com versions may slip through your filter. And on filter-less networks when little Johnny asks where all the porn is at, Sally says, “just tack on .xxx.”

Here’s how the Guardian ends their news story:

Use of the domain name is voluntary and is designed to shut out child porn and incorporate heightened security barriers, making it harder for children to stumble on sexual content online.

That is the exact PR ICM is using to defend itself: We’re protecting children from porn! The mainstream media needs to correct their stories to say “the domain name… is designed to make ICM money.” That’s the only reason .xxx exists. It fights child porn and hides sex just as well as a voluntary .religion domain would protect us from nutty extremists.

There is a real fear that this decision will lead to and inspire support for a .xxx mandate on every site considered “adult.” If this happens sites with even the slightest hint of eroticism or explicit commentary on sexuality will be in danger of unwarranted regulation.

sex scene in uk skins tv show

from Skins: Series 2 – Episode 6 (on Netflix streaming)

I don’t think that the prude groups who were criticizing MTV’s Skins a while back are aware that the original UK version of the show actually includes sex, nudity, and curse words.

O2 installs 18+ filter on the mobile web

To remove the block, you have to either use a credit card (which will be charged £1, though O2 will give you £2.50 off your next bill) or go into an O2 store with a passport or driver’s license and talk to the staff there. If you don’t drive or have a passport, and you don’t have a credit card, then you’re pretty much out of luck.

Do not get a phone on the O2 network! The problem with filters is that they always block content in grey areas (art), pretty much anything that they think is ‘adult.’ This includes sex ed resources. And requiring payment or identification to opt-out is infuriating.

Of course, as with any filter of this sort, it’s easy to break through it. I managed to get some boobs up within 30 seconds, finding them via Reddit onImgur. Another easy method to beat O2’s filter is to use the Opera Mini browser, which routes all content through Opera’s servers to compress it, so it’s not affected by the URL filtering.

Link No Evil

see no evil porn version

Although irritating, High On Sex’s abrupt departure from Blogger was long overdue. Ever since the site was slapped with a warning interstitial, I was thinking of moving on. But the effort required for such a move wasn’t something that inspired immediacy. It’s only now that I have been forced out that I find the energy to rebuild here at Tumblr [Update: now using self-hosted WordPress]. Still, I’m not sure when I’ll get around to fully restoring the posts that I have backed up…

The good things is that HoS lives on happily without a compulsory wall of warning.

But if you really want one, I made a custom and optional warning page just for you. Use it sparingly and for laughs, because, seriously, warning pages are a big lie.

Warnings bombard you so site owners can feel better about themselves or to appease those who pretend it’ll make a difference.

If you stumble upon this site thinking it was an inspirational journal of a struggling sex addict, simply click the back button on your browser. I, too, get disappointed with the Internet. Damn you, XXX Church!

The odds are that the site or person who links here provides context cluing you in on what High On Sex entails. Only a real asshole would trick you into clicking a porn link in front of your boss.

There’s the protect-the-children-defense to rebut, of course. I can assure you that Sesame Street won’t be linking to High On Sex. There’s a thing called ‘safe search,’ and overprotective parents can use filtering software. By the time minors circumvent security measures and start searching for ‘naughty things,’ they’re ready to know (whether we like it or not) that sex is a big part of human culture. If we don’t educate them, they’ll try to educate themselves. A weak warning, such as: Must be 18 to Enter, doesn’t stop the curious. It entices them.

Okay, so there’s a slim possibility that your sister’s toddler will start hitting your keyboard and slapping the mouse and, by chance, clicks on the bookmark to your favorite sexy blog. Your sister gets mad at you first and then blames High On Sex for not having the decency to use a warning page. She doesn’t realize that her kid might also accidentally stumble upon violent war footage on TV or walk in on Daddy eating Mommy’s pussy or see a deer get hit by a truck.

Young or old, there’s always a chance of encountering unwanted ‘obscenities.’ It’s a fact of life and in modern times this includes the rare surprise on the Internet.

People who want to avoid sexuality can do it much more easily on the Internet than in any other medium because of its selective and on-demand nature. It’s not as if porn is being thrown at you on computer startup. Having possibly “objectionable content” behind a redirect only serves to annoy willing visitors.

An evangelical website might be considered harmful to a secular family. FoxNews makes the Left sick and NPR infuriates the Right. Where are their disclaimers? Why doesn’t the XXX Church warn me that the site doesn’t include videos of priests getting rammed by nuns in strap-ons!

We Dare to Censor Games

We Dare: Trailer Analysis – IGN Rewind Theater

We Dare: Debut Trailer

Risqué Wii game We Dare pulled from release in UK  - Ars Technica

Video games, particularly in the US, remain infantilized in the minds of most. You’d think by now sexuality would be accepted in games. But no, the mainstream video game industry is going through the modern equivalent of what Hollywood went through in the ’60s. Apparently, these tame clips from Dragon Age 2 are considered sex scenes.

If history repeats itself, games will have their A Clockwork Orange soon enough. Then Deep Throat: The Game will be released on Xbox and porn studios will start making serious money again.

Until then we’ll have to turn to Europe.

Better Curve To Butt, Please

Laura Cover, October Playmate of the Month, 1998 [Rough Draft]

In an unprecedented move, Wikileaks has just leaked thousands of top secret documents uncovering the editorial process of the Playboy Perfection Police (PPP). The use of “airbrushing” in softcore pornography (and other print media) to promote an unrealistic expectation of beauty has long been suspected by conspiracy theorist. With the release of these documents, there is no longer any doubt: the images we see in magazines, on billboards, TV and the Internet are likely retouched.
