How to Illuminate the Forsaker

Have you ever met someone who was utterly unimpressed with pornography and then enlighten them with your collection of quality smut? You show her or him a scene from a Henry Paris movie and maybe the psychedelic money shot sequence from Behind the Green Door. They smirk and say, “So porn was okay in the ’70s, but today it’s all gaping anuses and 40 minutes of empty fucking.” Then their pupils dilate again as you show them Dita Von Teese bend over in slow-mo for Andrew Blake’s camera. By this point they’re comfortable and begin commenting on the Lynchian sensibilities of Jack the Zipper. “Oh, so this is lesbian porn,” they discover. As your presentation nears its end, your new friend asks about something they learned in a Tristan Taormino video and wonders where they can get the soundtrack to Hell is Where the Party Is.

As soon as they complain about narrative and acting you show them the trailer for the romcom Lost and Found (out 02/28/11).

They might recall a certain flick from the late ’90s and utter, “Finally, a porn remake that’s not a parody.”

If you have never educated a hapless porn renouncer, try it. Make the world a better place.

What Bach had in mind

I repeat, the soundtrack is essential. Background music is one of the few things that can set one porn scene apart from another.

Anything, pretty much, can be made great with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Air. A pity it switches to some generic track 5 minutes in.

The following scene is on the right track. Its score actually merits attention, an unfortunate rarity in porn. The tease by Kiki Vidis in lingerie and gloves and that dress she puts on for a second is complimented nicely with the jazz. But James Deen strolls in wearing a t-shirt and jeans and proceeds to a half-hearted whipping of Vidis. Come on, Deen. If the girl is working to fit a theme, the guy should have fun and play along, too.

I Watched ‘POPPORN: The Guide to Making Fuck’




Popporn, the ever popular porn blog, already experienced in Internet videomaking, was given the chance to make their own feature length pornographic film. POPPORN: The Guide to Making Fuck is that film, a spoof of Brian Bangs and Spock Buckton’s pornmaking odyssey. What they’ve accomplished is near superb yet a frolic.

Popporn has done something different not by tweaking the hue to an alt aesthetic but through its use of narrative.

Sex scenes in feature porn productions are normally isolated chunks. By the nature of porn, sex scenes pay little attention to the story connecting them. Porn as usual is okay; it’s just nothing to rave about. Popporn, however, has mastered how to flow from non-sex scene to fuck-making scene with little disconnection. Spock Buckton (the ‘director’) does an industry no-no, but it’s welcomed, in interrupting performers during sex, making the scenes both part of the narrative and the ‘porn’.

Of course it helps a deal that this is a mockumentary about the making of a porno. Which by the way: Why has this not been done before (or has it)? Acting is more believable when it does not stem from the loosely added dialogue typical in everyday features.

I’m Still Partying in Hell



Last I mentioned Hell is Where the Party Is, its trailer got me gushing about wallpaper porn: the kind of porn perfect for a wall at a hot party. Better late than never, I finally got around to watching the film, and it’s as awesome as the trailer suggests.

Edited like a techno music video, Hell is Where the Party Is makes you want to do a little dance as you jerk off (or fuck). If you’ve watched a lot of porn movies, you know that sex scenes are often boring and overlong when you’re not looking for stimulation. HiWtPi is mesmerizing regardless of your mood. You could watch it with your clothes on. Of course, that wouldn’t be as fun.

A certain Russian model doing a great Rei Ayanami caught my eye the other day. Julia is her name when you see her on the cover of Japanese DVDs. I got my hands on one, and that’s when I learned about gravure titles.
Hardcore pornography in Japan, as you know, consists of pixelated genitalia.* Softcore simply takes the sex away. Gravure is a further downgrade.

I Went to the ‘Hardcore Circus’



You probably don’t know Erica McLean as the director of multiple Barely Legal titles. You’ll know her as the director of Hardcore Circus and, let’s hope, of more edgier productions to come.

Hardcore Circus isn’t as subversive as the hype led me to believe. Although, it’s definitely better than something as pretentious as this. Its Super 8 intro and transitional vignettes (see trailer) now look like porn’s new wave trend, as another (better?) woman-directed porn film featured the same technique earlier this year.

But that’s okay, because the big tricks in Hardcore Circus are where they need to be: the sex. This movie is worth watching for the scenes pictured below. Too many of the rest play like obligatory fillers.

And so the story goes…
McLean is the valley’s biggest pornographer. She faces anti-porn mobs and religious fiends because of it. On her way to masturbation lane she slips on her would-be lube. Then, not unlike Dorothy Gale, joins the hardcore circus.

Bring Back the Movie Posters

Have you noticed that movies are doing extremely well at the box office? They’re breaking records in the midst of a piracy scare.

If only current adult features where shown in mainstream multiplexes, maybe porn piracy wouldn’t be such a fright.

Movie-going is a shared experience. I’d imagine a group of friends would enjoy watching the latest Pirates or porn parody in a packed theater (art houses could show artsy porn). And when they get home they’d masturbate to their copy of the movie (or a random video on YouPorn) or have sex. People already love watching robot pr0n together. The Friday the 13th remake was the typical slasher flick full of gratuitous boobs, sex and gore. No one watched those movies for the story.

Is it naive to dream of a world where today’s taboos and censorship are non-existent? Where hardcore porn can be found on national television and in a theater near you? Where crappy porn is just as acceptable as a the summer’s Hollywood action blockbuster?

I always knew I was extreme. Then again, regarding free speech, the finish line for progress is usually porn.
